How Gallery Systems and 4D are helping bring art to the world

Numerous types of institutions and businesses utilize image management applications. These applications are essentially databases that let users catalog and track images. But they vary significantly according to the markets they are designed for. Digital photographers, for example, want a program geared to the particulars of managing digital photos. Museums, on the other hand, are interested in programs that let them manage both digital images and the physical objects they represent, such as paintings, sculptures or historic photographs.

New York-based Gallery Systems provides image management software and services to museums, foundations, collectors, and visual resource libraries throughout the world. Their program EmbARK is utilized by many top museums, including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Frick Collection in New York.

While digital image management is a central feature of the program, EmbARK’s comprehensive data structure makes it ideal for cataloguing detailed information about images or the object collections they represent. Museums use EmbARK to track each of the objects in their collection. They can track such things as the title and dimensions of each piece, while also managing histories of locations, valuations, exhibitions, and loans.

The newest addition to EmbARK is Web Kiosk, an add-on module that makes data held in EmbARK accessible via the Internet. Once data is catalogued in EmbARK, it can be put online using Web Kiosk. Visitors can peruse a virtual gallery by searching on specific criteria or by browsing through thematic portfolios and indexes. Many institutions have implemented EmbARK Web Kiosk in order to broaden access to their collections. The list includes Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester and San Jose State University, School of Art & Design.
And what is used to power EmbARK Web Kiosk? A 4D Web engine, of course! But Gallery Systems isn’t stopping here. Currently they are exploring integration of 4D Business Kit as a way to allow museums and other clients to sell digital images managed through EmbARK online. With this capability museums can even publish a CD-Rom with EmbARK CD, authoring and selling it right in their gift shop.

Another way that 4D is helping improve the way critical information is managed in healthcare!
