The UK’s newest gallery of modern and contemporary art, mima, opens its doors on January 27, 2007
January 27, 2007 sees a landmark new building designed by Erick van Egeraat Associated Architects become the home of mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art.
The new Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) gallery building and adjoining Public Square are part of the redevelopment of the town center in Middlesbrough, serving as commercial and cultural center for an area of about 650,000 people.
The new gallery will manage Middlesbrough’s collection of 20th–century modern arts and crafts using TMS. The software will also play a significant role in the planning and organisation of mima's temporary exhibitions, housed on approximately 4,000 m2 of gallery space.
mima opens with Draw, Conversations Around the Legacy of Drawing. This inaugural exhibition shows drawings by some of the most significant artists of the 20th century in relationship to works by a number of outstanding contemporary artists.
Featured artists include: Pablo Picasso – Chantal Joffe
Henri Matisse – Chris Ofili
Marcel Duchamp – Ceal Floyer
Jackson Pollock – DJ Simpson
Francis Bacon – Damien Hirst
Andy Warhol – Gavin Turk
Joseph Beuys – David Musgrave
The gallery opens to the public for a sneak preview of Draw from 5:30-9pm on Saturday January 27. Normal opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sun 12 noon-4pm. Closed Monday. Admission to mima is free.
