Experienced museum professionals lend a hand to cultural institutions
NEW YORK, NY – October 25, 2006
The eighth annual White Gloves Gang (WGG) volunteer event took place on October 25, 2006 at Brooklyn and Manhattan museums, historical societies and other cultural institutions. The WGG volunteer projects coincided with the 2006 Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM) Annual Meeting, “Bridging Communities”, October 22 - 24, 2006 at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott.
Sponsored by the Registrars Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (RC-MAAM), the WGG matches volunteers for projects with local meeting-area institutions in need of assistance. Projects range from cataloguing artifacts and numbering objects, to conducting inventories and re-housing objects and archives. “The event is a wonderful way for institutions to get a bit of extra help, for volunteers to use their expertise in a different setting, and for everyone to meet new people and see new places,” said WGG Founder and first coordinator, Melissa M. Heaver.
This year’s volunteers worked on projects at Brooklyn Historical Society; Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution; Lower East Side Tenement Museum; New York Transit Museum and Wyckoff House.
The continued generosity of sponsors contributes to the ongoing success of the WGG. This year’s sponsors include Gallery Systems, leading provider of collections management software, and Crozier Fine Arts, an art storage and transportation company.
