Zoomify and Gallery Systems Offer Database-Driven Online Image Zooming
Berkeley, CA March 10, 2004

High-quality image viewing on the web is sought by any institution delivering content online. Zoomify, Inc. of Santa Cruz, CA and Gallery Systems, Inc, based in New York City, NY have partnered to enable easy delivery of this concept. For a limited time, museum and university clients using EmbARK can integrate Zoomify tools for free.

The Zoomify suite provides a set of tools for converting standard image files (such as JPG, TIF, of BMP) to a format that is easily loaded via a web browser. The front end offers tools such as zooming and panning. Behind the scenes, the file is converted to a set of “tiles” such that the browser only needs to load the data needed for screen display. One side-benefit is the security that an image may not be right-clicked and saved to a user’s local drive.

Gallery Systems’s EmbARK database creates a catalog of image files with extensive descriptive text fields. The data and images may be published online with the EmbARK Web Kiosk application. By utilizing the extensive image metadata captured in the database, EmbARK automates the conversion process of large sets of images to Zoomify format. Furthermore, default templates for displaying data with EmbARK Web Kiosk are easily customized to dynamically display zoomable images.

Through April 15, 2004, EmbARK clients may obtain a free copy of the scriptable Enterprise edition of Zoomify (a $795 value). Participants are encouraged to integrate image zooming into their online site.
